Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Richard is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. He specialises in cosmetic surgery, breast surgery and skin cancer surgery. Richard is also a Consultant in NHS Forth Valley. He has been working in Plastic Surgery since 2003 and has undertaken several fellowships developing expertise in certain areas – a Head and Neck Fellowship where he gained experience in surgery of the face, eyelids, ears and nose; a skin cancer fellowship where he trained in all aspects of skin cancer treatment including Mohs’ Surgery; and most recently in breast surgery fine tuning skills in all forms of breast reshaping and reconstruction. Richard is on the GMC Specialist Register as a Plastic Surgeon.

Richard graduated from Glasgow University in 1998 and after undertaking basic surgical training started his career in plastic surgery. He undertook much of his plastic surgery training in the world famous Canniesburn Plastic Surgery unit and in 2004 started a research degree in skin cancer leading to the award of an MD research degree along with the publication of several scientific papers. In 2007 he was appointed to the Pan-Scotland Plastic Surgery training scheme and has spent time in Dundee, Belgium, Detroit and Norwich developing specialist skills in breast surgery, cosmetic surgery and skin cancer surgery. He was successful in obtaining one of the highly sought after Training Interface group fellowships in 2013.

Richard moved to NHS Forth Valley in 2014 to set up breast reconstruction services where he also undertakes skin cancer surgery and provides general reconstructive services. Richard is one of few plastic surgeons trained in oncoplastic breast surgery and even fewer trained in Mohs’ surgery.

Richard holds a number of qualifications:
  • MB ChB – Qualification as a Doctor.
  • MRCS – Basic surgical qualification.
  • MD – A postgraduate medical degree awarded from the University of Glasgow following 2 years of research in Skin Cancer.
  • FRCS(Plast) – Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in Plastic Surgery. Advanced Specialist qualification in Plastic Surgery, required to be a Consultant.
  • Richard is a Full Member of BAPRAS, The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.

Jim McCaul

Jim specialises in the full range of anti-ageing and facial rejuvenation treatments and procedures. This encompasses all aspects of facial surgery and cosmetic facial plastic surgery including face lifts, neck lifts, blepharoplasty, otoplasty and rhinoplasty.  In addition Jim has extensive expertise in a wide range of non-surgical rejuvenation and cosmetic treatments such as lasering, botox, fillers and sculptra.

Since graduating with honours in both medicine and dentistry from the University of Glasgow, Prof McCaul has been at the forefront of his field been published widely in facial surgery research and is the author of over 81 original research articles, 170 research abstracts and five book chapters. He was awarded a PhD in Head and Neck Cancer Medicine in 2005 and has won 16 National and International prizes for his work. His first book for the open market , “Face to Face” was published in 2018 and is an Amazon best seller. It was also published in Russian in 2021. Prof McCaul is an associate editor of the International Journal of Surgery and a reviewer for another 18 medical research journals.

In addition to his academic and research credentials, Prof McCaul has extensive practical, hands on experience as a surgeon for over 20 years.  Currently working at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus in Glasgow, he is also Professor Emeritus in the Institute for Cancer Therapeutics in the University of Bradford. Until his relocation to Scotland, he was also a consultant surgeon at the esteemed Royal Marsden Hospital in London and London Northwest Healthcare Trust where he was the Director of Research and Development and is widely acknowledged to be one of the leading and most experienced facial maxillo-facial surgeons in the UK.

Jim trained in facial surgery in Scotland, Miami and London, and his knowledge of world leading techniques allows him to provide a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation for clients. This approach starts with establishing the general and mental health of his patient and understanding their concerns and what they wish to achieve through treatment. He will discuss the facial aging process, how this is affecting your face and the best non-surgical and surgical methods to provide treatment for you.  

This approach allows Prof McCaul to put in place a comprehensive treatment package to address your concerns, set realistic expectations and help you achieve a fresh, rejuvenated change and your desired goals.

  • MB ChB(Honours) – Qualification as a Doctor.
  • BDS(Honours) – Qualification as a dentist
  • FRCS (Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh)– Surgical qualification.
  • FDSRCPS Higher dental qualification- fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • PhD – Awarded from the University of Glasgow following three years of laboratory and clinical research in head and neck cancer.
  • FRCS(Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) – Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in Maxillofacial Surgery. Advanced Specialist qualification in Maxillofacial Surgery, required to be a Consultant.
